• LIGHT
  • SCIENCE VS. ART

Lighting Designers can generally be divided into two groups: (1) those who focus on and design around lights scientific and measurable properties (foot-candle ratios, efficiency, lumen output, and coefficient utilization) and (2) those who focus on and design around its visual properties (glare, color, brightness and contrast). It is rare to find lighting designers who design with both properties in mind; those who understand the technical and scientific properties of light, but more importantly, those who have a great understanding of it's visual properties and how to manipulate them in our physical world. This is why quality lighting has been commonly described as scientific art.

Often times there are great designers who work purely from the right side of their brain. Their ideas are unique but not very practical and it is difficult to convey these ideas to installing contractors. Others design purely from the left side making their designs mostly technical and not very creative. At HELIUS Lighting Group we try to utilize both hemispheres of the brain during the design process. This gives the client the comfort that their projects will be creative and fresh and gives the contractors the peace of mind to know that the designs are practical and will be transferred in ways that are comprehensible.
